Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir will not be put on trial at the International Criminal Court. He was a major fish for the ICC. The Hague-based court asked for his arrest in March 2009 but gave up on 12 December this year.

Al-Bashir was wanted for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, allegedly committed in Darfur since 2003. He is alleged to have planned the murder, rape and deportation of three ethnic groups.

But Sudan is not an ICC member, and the country refuses to cooperate with the ICC. Al-Bashir has the support of China on the UN Security Council. ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda will now shift her focus to other investigations.
