Peter van Krieken earned a Ph.D. in international law from Groningen University in 1976. He lectures on international law, human rights, as well as refugee and migration issues at Webster and The Hague University. Van Krieken worked for the UNHCR for more than 16 years, serving in such varied countries as Pakistan, South Sudan and Lebanon.

According to Dr. van Krieken, “governments need to set up a proper system to handle refugees and stateless people. As a lawyer, I am able to keep anyone in the country for at least 7 years. There are a huge number of procedures, state laws, refugee laws and trafficking laws. But it is not possible to win every battle.

“There is no single European state that is competent to deal with this issue. The reason is that countries do not apply the proper mechanisms on the national level even though they’ve agreed them at the international level. This is a failure of the rule of law.

“We need to set up a proper system. Refugees are refugees. They deserve to be safe from persecution and distress. But we need to know who is coming and who will be coming in the next decade.”

Dr. van Krieken is a great and inspiring lecturer. He approaches the law from a very utilitarian perspective. His expertise in the field of international human rights and refugee law is marvelous; he knows how to bring law into practice in such astute and realistic manner. In my opinion, no one is able to explain Geneva Convention of 1951, it's Protocol of 1967, Dublin Regulation, ECtHR Jurisprudence and all the related EU Regulations and Directives concerning subsidiary protection and harmonization of EU refugee law. Dr. Van Krieken wants his students to think out of the box in order to be able to apply the law even in the most critical and complicated situations.

In order to get the highest grade in his written and oral exam; attend his lectures and come prepared, do not hesitate to ask and interact with him, take notes, study very hard, think out of the box and be very academic and professional. Thank you Joao for this nice picture, and I thank you very much Dr. van Krieken for your wonderful course of last year at The Hague University of Applied Sciences. K. Matrad

Thanks Janet. Dr. van Krieken is one of the most respected lecturers at Webster U. Tough, critical but fair...and always willing to entertain the most absurd arguments of we students.
